My 30-day cringe social media challenge

Recently I was chatting with a friend about growing on social media.

Funny how much I know about it but still struggle to do it for myself.

I'm not someone who has a "niche" or an expertise to promote. I'm posting about... well me.

I can literally post anything I want. Which is both great and overwhelming at the same time. On one hand, I have total freedom and don't have to "fit in a box" like I was so scared of. On the other hand, well I suffer from the paradox of choice.

I struggle to decide what "I want to be known for", which usually determines what type of content you should create.

I've been posting on social media for years, but VERY on and off.

Typically, I'll start posting, then get confused about what I should post next, then overthink, then try a bunch of things without results, burn out, and then disappear for a few months.

🥴

And the problem I'm facing is always the same: what the hell should I post? Or, rather, what the hell do I WANT to post?

And I never know.

Until now, I've always tried to think my way to clarity. Chatting with Claude or ChatGPT for hours. Re-planning a content strategy for the millionth time. Deciding what my entire feed will look like before even creating one post.

But here's the problem. Every time, the new strategy makes perfect sense... until it doesn't. I first get a burst of motivation and post with excitement.

But then I post something that doesn't feel good. I rewatch my post and cringe. And realize that well... I don't want to post this kind of stuff.

So I hit a wall and suddenly re-question myself (and my entire existence for that matter).

And just like that, the entire ChatGPT strategy falls through.

So I "take a break" of posting on social media. Only to come up with a new strategy. And on and on the loop goes.

Which is why I've committed to myself to post every day for 30 days without caring what I post about. I just press record. The only rule is: I show up.

I started literally saying: "Day 1 recording myself until I figure out what to post". Little did I know that naming the purpose of the video would remove all the pressure of posting something good, btw.

And yes, I cringed. And yes, I doubted myself. Questioned my entire existence again. Thought it was horrible, and wondered if I'm ever going to figure it out.

But this time, instead of trying to think harder, I just let it go. I posted. Forgot about it. Showed up the next day. Posted. Forgot about it again.

I'm now on day 15.

And... it's working.

Every post I create feels more and more natural. Every day, I'm a little bit more me online. With every post, I'm closer to knowing what I want to post.

Am I saying the posts are good? Not even close lol.

But I care less. If not at all.

The thing is, it was never about "knowing" what to post. It was really about stop caring about a one-in-a-billon 7-second video. And getting over that uncomfortable phase where my brain is telling me I'm never going to make it.

F***ing brain.

Turns out strategy is just anxiety in disguise. You're scared of the unknown, so you try and find ways to "know". You search, you plan, you chat with AI, and you strategize instead of just... doing the thing.

So 15 days ago, I got tired of my own bullshit. I've stopped AI conversations about my "personal brand". (Like bro, I know my brand 🙄). And I've started to just post. Without caring.

A friend (same friend, actually) once told me: to change your results, you have to change your approach. It was about relationships, but I believe it applies to everything and it stuck with me.

Well I've changed my approach. I know that as long as I show up, it cannot NOT work. That's just not a possibility.

So I'm embracing the unknown because at this point what do I have to lose.

Ok. Love you, talk next week.

At 31, I quit my job, sold everything, and boarded a one-way flight with a backpack, a journal, and no plan. If I asked you, at 5 years old, "what do you want to be when you grow up?", what would your answer have been? I guess mine would have been "Britney Spears". But as far as I can remember (pretty much 5 years old), I didn't know what to answer. Or, rather, I never dared to say it out loud. I clearly remember that I wanted to be an actress. But I was too afraid to put it out there. Which is wild... what kind of conditioning did I already receive — at 5 years old!! — to make me so self-conscious?...

You get home from work. Phone in hand, you drop your bag, take off your shoes and hang your jacket. All you need is to stare out the window for a minute, so your brain can recharge from the social interactions you had today. But then next thing you know, you've been staring at your phone for the past 30 minutes, standing in the hallway like a moron. Doom scrolling. Wtf? Because before you even made 3 steps toward the kitchen to pour yourself a glass of water, you've opened TikTok. Probably...
