I dream of going on tour performing my original music on stage for my fans. When I'm seeing big artists I love like Miley Cyrus (now MILEY), Rihanna, Taylor Swift and more, and I am both really inspired... and also extremely overwhelmed by the gap separating where I am to where they are. I didn't grow up surrounded by people in the industry. Neither did I choose to pursue music when I was a kid. I did some piano lessons here and there, but that was it. And now, at 36 I have the desire, talent and determination to work for it... but none of the skills I need to achieve what I want to achieve. Or so my brain wants me to believe. It's easy to compare myself to artists my age who have been in the industry since they were teenagers. Or musicians who have picked up their first instruments when they were 8... and then think shit I'm too late. But I am also delusional enough to know I can make it, and to know that it's not too late for me to become really good at something I give my mind, heart and soul to. There's so many things I want to learn. Writing songs. Producing music. Playing instruments (well). Become a great singer, and dancer. Make music videos. And while I'm not starting from ZERO zero, I'm far from mastering any of it. Which leads me to the next big overwhelm: where the F do I start?! I tried a music production workshop for women. Got totally overwhelmed. Tried toplining (writing lyrics and melody over an existing track). Got completely stuck. Tried to pick up guitar again. Got frustrated. K. I knew it wasn't going to be easy, but the overwhelm is real. I don't know where to start from here. Which is also silly to think because... I've already started!! 😅 I've been taking singing lessons for a year now, picked up guitar, learned to work with a DAW (the software used to produce music), record vocals and started experimenting with songwriting. All while moving countries and rebuilding my life from scratch. Like girl, you're doing good, okay?! So yeah, comparison is a bitch. But it's also a compass. It means the dream is still there. And will still be there later. There's nothing I can do about where I am now. Past choices lead me here. So now, I choose to be fully living in the present, while preparing and getting excited about the future. I'm still figuring out my next step when it comes to music. And it will probably be to join a music school, to surround myself with mentors, coaches and contacts in the industry. All while I'm figuring out how to make more money to support my artist development while sustaining my lifestyle (which standards have become quite high). In other words, no struggling artist is going to happen here. Good thing I chose one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in 🫠 Anyway. I'll figure it out. As usual. Until next week, MP xx |
A few years ago I quit my job, sold everything, and boarded a one-way flight with only a backpack, a journal and no plan. I figured out what I wanted, and now I am rebuilding my whole life and career. Give me your email and every week I’ll send you my thoughts and updates on the process.

If I asked you, at 5 years old, "what do you want to be when you grow up?", what would your answer have been? I guess mine would have been "Britney Spears". But as far as I can remember (pretty much 5 years old), I didn't know what to answer. Or, rather, I never dared to say it out loud. I clearly remember that I wanted to be an actress. But I was too afraid to put it out there. Which is wild... what kind of conditioning did I already receive — at 5 years old!! — to make me so self-conscious?...
You get home from work. Phone in hand, you drop your bag, take off your shoes and hang your jacket. All you need is to stare out the window for a minute, so your brain can recharge from the social interactions you had today. But then next thing you know, you've been staring at your phone for the past 30 minutes, standing in the hallway like a moron. Doom scrolling. Wtf? Because before you even made 3 steps toward the kitchen to pour yourself a glass of water, you've opened TikTok. Probably...
